Chair in Nonlinear Dynamics for Automotive Transmissions of the Future
Headline

Arts et Métiers Valeo launched this industrial chair in Lille on October 17, 2018. It is dedicated to the study of non-linear vibratory phenomena in the automotive transmissions of the future in order to improve passenger comfort.

Main body text

After a three-year collaboration between the Arts et Métiers in Lille and the Valeo team in Amiens (Transmission Systems), as well as the completion of a doctoral thesis formalized by the publication of research articles, patents, technology transfers, and ongoing industrialization, the partnership between Arts et Métiers Valeo took the form of an industrial chair. This five-year chair will undertake thesis work, post-doctoral studies, and training for engineers. It will also organize events for scientific dissemination and exchanges.

SCIENTIFIC FRAMEWORK

The purpose of the Chair is to work on noise and vibration control in the automotive powertrains of the future. Its challenges include improving existing anti-vibration devices or proposing new strategies that challenge current practices in thermal, hybrid, or electric powertrains. In particular, the analysis, modeling, and physical understanding of nonlinear vibration phenomena are central to the activities of this Chair. The goal is to Master of Science nonlinearities of current devices—either to reduce them or to take advantage of them—and to design more efficient technical components.

OBJECTIVES

In this context, four objectives are targeted:

  • To create and develop original theoretical knowledge at the highest current level. This includes the analysis, understanding, modeling, and mastering of new concepts of antivibration devices, especially non-linear ones.
  • To develop new methods and tools for numerical calculation of vibrating systems and structures for use by design offices, particularly in nonlinear mechanics;
  • To apply and transfer this knowledge to industry for the improvement of current industrial products and the creation of new breakthrough technologies;
  • To participate in the training of tomorrow's engineers.

Development of innovation in the field of product lifecycle management methods and tools, as well as training employees in PLM tools and preparing them for Industry 4.0 in partnership with Capgemini.

Main body text

The "PLM of the Future" chair, launched in 2017, has been renewed for a further five-year period, from January 2025 to 2030. Supported by Arts et Métiers, Capgemini Engineering, the LCPI (Product Design and Innovation Laboratory) and the LISPEN (Physical and Digital Systems Engineering Laboratory), this chair aims to anticipate industrial needs in terms of digital continuity and accelerate innovation focused on the product lifecycle.

Research areas

The research conducted within the framework of this chair will address three major challenges facing Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) in the future:

  • Managing growing data volumes: Faced with an explosion in the amount of information to be processed, researchers will explore new methods to optimize its collection, organization, and use.
  • Information heterogeneity: The objective is to develop tools that enable better integration and harmonization of different data sources within industrial systems.
  • Sustainability of technological choices: The chair will also focus on responsible and sustainable solutions to address environmental and societal challenges.

Training and skills development

Beyond research, this chair also contributes to training the experts of tomorrow. More than 150 Capgemini Engineering employees have already benefited from the AMTalents program, and the chair also supports researchers with three completed theses and two in progress.

Arts et Métiers and ESI Group are joining forces to create an international teaching and research chair in the field of engineering and digital engineering of materials, processes, structures, and systems.

Main body text

SCIENTIFIC FRAMEWORK

The CREATE ID International Chair in Teaching and Research between Arts et Métiers ESI Group, a leading provider of Virtual Prototyping software and services specializing in materials physics, focuses on several areas of research related to the industry of the future:

  • Real-time simulation of production stages based on physics models (via model reduction),
  • Modeling and simulation driven by data (heterogeneous and not necessarily massive) and artificial intelligence techniques (Engineered Artificial Intelligence)
  • The hybridization of these two components to define different types of digital twins, where data is used to enrich models, and models are used to make data more intelligent, with the aim of predicting the behavior of a material/process/component-structure/system throughout its lifetime.

This research can be applied in several sectors: automotive, aeronautics, naval, metallurgy, health, etc. The Chair will also aim to develop engineering training and education in these areas of research.
