Becoming a Military Infrastructure Engineer (MIE)
In partnership with the Ministry of the Armed Forces, Arts et Métiers Military Infrastructure Engineers (IMI) for the Defense Infrastructure Service (SID), the ministry's reference point for construction, real estate, and energy. The SID provides operational support to the Army, Navy, Air and Space Force, the Directorate General of Armament, the Armed Forces Health Service, and Cyber Defense.
Engineering officers are responsible for construction and renovation projects, maintenance and upkeep of the ministry's real estate portfolio and technical facilities (data centers, hospitals, naval bases, industrial and nuclear facilities, air bases, power generation facilities, etc.), in mainland France, overseas territories, abroad, and in theaters of operations, and are destined for management and supervisory positions.
Once Arts et Métiers their Arts et Métiers engineering degree, young engineering officerstake up their first posting with the rank of lieutenant. The roles performedwithin the SID relate to project management, maintenance, or project ownership.
Admitted candidates have military status and are paid as officer cadets during their studies, with a six-year service obligation once appointed to the IMI corps.
The training program for engineering officer cadets consists of four years of study.
one year of military training at one of the military officer schools (Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan Military Academy, Air and Space Academy, Naval Academy) and an operational unit of the armed forces (Army, Air Force, Navy);
Three years of academic training corresponding to the Arts et Métiers Grande Ecole Program, at the Arts et Métiers campus in Arts et Métiers . During the last two years, IMI students follow a course in "Engineering and Sustainable Construction Management" with a strong focus on building, public works, and public procurement. The program also includes internships, international mobility (in a company or within a humanitarian organization), and expertise projects whose content is defined by the SID.

The SID recruits its military infrastructure engineers externally.Thiscompetitive examination is mainly aimed at students in preparatory classes for the grandes écoles (CPGE): you are a studentin a preparatory class(PT and Centrale Supélec competitive examination; art.5.1.a)/ you are afirst-yearstudentat Arts et Métiers art.5.1.b.).
1. Competitive examinations at the end of preparatory classes (Article 5.1.a)
During the common for students in preparatory classes in the PT (Physics and Technology) or PSI (Physics and Engineering Sciences) streams.
To be admitted to the IMI program, candidates must pass the Arts et Métiers joint entrance exam Arts et Métiers attend a 30-minute motivational interview. This interview is conducted in front of a panel of three military engineers from the SID, who are responsible for assessing the candidate's motivation and aptitude for a career as a military engineer and officer.
Admission requirements for the IMI program:
Be a French citizen;
Be no older than 22 years of age on January 1, 2026;
Meet the admission requirements for Arts et Métiers
Have provided a medical-administrative certificate of initial fitness for "IMI recruitment";
Have satisfied the defense security investigation;
Have passed the motivational interview.
2. Competitive examinations during the first year of study at Arts et Métiers Article 5.1.b)
During the 1A application process for students enrolled in the first year of the Grande Ecole Program at one of the Arts et Métiers campuses. The oral exam consists of a 30-minute interview with a panel of three military engineers from the SID, who are responsible for assessing the candidate's motivation and aptitude for a career as a military engineer and officer.
The admission requirements for the IMI program are as follows:
Be no older than 23 years of age on January 1, 2026.
Have successfully completed the first year of the Grande Ecole Arts et Métiers program,

Have satisfied the defense security investigation,
Have passed the motivational interview.
