Arts et Métiers Texas A&M University, leading engineering education and research institutions, have joined forces after more than 20 years of collaboration to establish a transatlantic partnership for the industry of the future. This culminated in November 2017 with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the official creation of AM², a center for research, innovation, and training in the field of smart manufacturing and materials science in the heart of Europe at the Arts et Métiers campus in Arts et Métiers .
A transatlantic and strategic collaboration
AM² is a joint research, innovation, and training center focused on advanced materials and manufacturing, bringing together teachers, researchers, doctoral students, and students from TEES Texas A&M andArts et Métiers.
AM² offers a huge strategic advantage for the United States and France, aiming to create significant synergies in today's global academic and research environment:
- Promote the internationalization of its activities, as well as structured mobility for staff, students, and doctoral candidates.
- Driving change in global industry through significant public-private partnerships
- Advancing new scientific, technological, and developmental challenges
- Contributing to raising the innovation ecosystem of the industry of the future
A shared vision
To establish AM² as a globally recognized center of excellence for applied research, training, and innovation in the field of materials science and manufacturing.
Stand out with an interdisciplinary approach to artificial intelligence, hybrid manufacturing, manufacturing analysis and control, multiscale analysis, and materials science in the fields of aeronautics, transportation, energy, the environment, and more.
Pool resources and skills through transatlantic teams to enable companies, large and small, to participate in projects at different levels according to their needs and funding.
A structuring project for Arts et Métiers
Working closely on industrial and strategic issues common to both countries, AM² comprises two components:
Search
- Expansion of collaborative research opportunities for both institutions in France and Texas in their shared areas of excellence in materials science and manufacturing, in partnership with French and American industry operating on both continents.
- Research funding,
- Pooling funding requests,
- Joint publication of scientific articles,
- Organization of symposiums in the United States and France on smart manufacturing and artificial intelligence for Industry 4.0.
- Hosting interns in the laboratories of both institutions
- Collaborations through joint supervision of theses and with consortium partners
- Awarding of a scholarship Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair in 2020 to Satish Bukkapatnam
Training
- Expansion of international training opportunities:
- Study abroad: Hosting engineering students from Texas A&M University on the Aix-en-Provence campus for study abroad programs every summer
- Exchange semester with credit transfer
- Dual master's degree in Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Science (AM²S) on the Aix-en-Provence campus (https://artsetmetiers.fr/fr/formation/parcours-m1-m2)
- Dual Master of Science degree Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Engineering (ITDE) in Texas
- Laboratory and company internship programs
- Joint appointments of research professors, affiliated professors, visiting professors, and faculty visits
- Creation of new faculty positions in the field of smart manufacturing for Arts et Métiers
- Participation in the international hackathon: INVENT for the PLANET organized by Texas A&M
Background
TEES is part of Texas A&M University, one of the largest higher education systems in the United States, and collaborates with Texas A&M University College of Engineering, the second largest university engineering program by research expenditure in the country. TEES is a leading research institution and one of the top 10 engineering programs in the United States, with more than 35 professors specializing in advanced manufacturing.
Arts et Métiers
Arts et Métiers a founding member of the Industry of the Future initiative. It positions itself as a socio-economic player contributing to industrial development through the specific nature of its missions (training/research/transfer). It is developing a strategy based on the emergence of ecosystems as close as possible to businesses in order to provide support in terms of innovation and training. It is one of the most renowned engineering programs in France, a major technological institution with eight campuses and three institutes. Each year, it trains more than 6,000 students from bachelor's to master's level.
The MSMP-EA7350 laboratory is multi-site (Aix-en-Provence, Châlons-en-Champagne, Lille) and fully integrated into Arts et Métiers leads this transatlantic partnership with TEES-TAMU/USA for the industry of the future. It develops multidisciplinary research in the field of materials and manufacturing processes.
