Doctoral studies are undertaken after obtaining a master's degree or equivalent qualification, which validates the candidate's research skills. It takes three years to become a doctor; three years of research, culminating in a thesis defended before a jury of specialists who will authorize the awarding of the doctoral degree. This degree is therefore equivalent to eight years of higher education, the equivalent of a PhD in the Anglo-Saxon world.
Where can I prepare?
Doctoral School 432 "Engineering Sciences" is responsible for organizing and monitoring doctoral students' training. In particular, it ensures the quality of their work and the supervision of their theses. Research work is carried out under the supervision of a university professor, a research director, or a teacher-researcher who holds a qualification to supervise research (HDR).
The thesis provides initial paid professional experience through a doctoral contract, a research contract, an industrial contract, or a doctoral scholarship.
A comprehensive program
Doctoral studies provide training in research and innovation. The work is carried out in anArts et Métiers laboratory , but part of it may be carried out within an organization or at an industrial partner's premises. Doctoral students are required to attend research seminars and give presentations during Doctoral Student Days. They must also present their work at an international conference and write at least one article for an international journal.
At Arts et Métiers, in addition to daily research activities, 100 hours of introductory courses are mandatory, to be chosen from among the courses offered (or according to other numerous formulas designed to promote their openness ): 50 hours of scientific opening courses, i.e., outside their thesis subject, and 50 hours of opening courses to the world ofbusiness. These courses are designed to facilitate their integration into high-level professional positions.
Each year, the doctoral school organizes:
- two orientation days (J1A) bringing together first-year doctoral students from all Arts et Métiers campuses in Paris
- two days (J2A) bringing together all second-year doctoral students from the ED SMI in Paris to raise awareness of the need to start thinking about their career prospects after their thesis as early as possible.
The five major subject areas of the doctoral school
- Solid Mechanics and Materials
- Fluid Mechanics and Energy
- Design and Industrialization
- Mathematics and Systems
- Healthcare Engineering
