Noémie Bertrand and Hubert Duthoit are second-year students in the Grande École Program on the Metz campus. Since joining Arts et Métiers, they have both been enrolled in a dual French-German degree program with the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT).
What level of German do you have?
Hubert Duthoit: I didn't take European studies classes and I don't have any German relatives. I simply took German as my second foreign language, which I even had to stop during my preparatory years.
Noémie Bertrand: My career path is a little unusual! I did Abibac at high school, a program that allows you to obtain both the French baccalaureate and its German equivalent, then I went on to do a triple degree between France, Germany, and Belgium. We changed countries and universities every semester. I entered Arts et Métiers the passerelle competitive exam.
Why did you choose this international dual degree program?
Hubert Duthoit: I always aimed for Germany so that I could stay in Europe, close to my family and friends, while practicing German and English.
Noémie Bertrand: I lived in Alsace for a long time, and I saw that engineers who speak both French and German are in high demand. I wanted to be able to continue studying German and engineering.
The KIT is a globally recognized qualification, which will also enable me to work in Switzerland.
What sets this dual degree apart from others?
Hubert Duthoit: This dual degree is recognized throughout Europe and serves as a springboard for quickly entering the world of international engineering.
Noémie Bertrand: Those who need it can receive German language support lessons before departure.
Do you sometimes doubt whether your German is good enough to pursue this dual degree?
Hubert Duthoit: Yes, of course! In fact, I am currently studying to obtain the DAF level B2, the language test required to continue my education in Germany. I reassure myself by telling myself that I am not the only one.
There is a deep sense of solidarity among the students enrolled in this dual degree program. We encourage each other.
Noémie Bertrand: I already studied for over two years in Switzerland and Germany, so I think I'll be fine!
