Joris Guérin, a doctoral student Arts et Métiers, is the recipient of the prestigious Fulbright scholarship, which will enable him to continue his research in the United States.
After completing a preparatory class for the grandes écoles (MPSI/MP) at the Lycée la Martinière Monplaisir in Lyon, Joris Guérin enrolled at Arts et Métiers. He chose to do a double Master's degree in the United States at Texas Tech University in Industrial Engineering as his third year. On his return to France, he chose the Lille campus to begin his thesis at the Laboratory of Information and Systems Sciences (LSIS).
A PhD in Machine Learning
" My research project focuses on "autonomous learning of object grasping strategies." It involves designing and implementing algorithms that enable a robot to grasp objects based on information received from two cameras. The robot must be capable of learning the actions to perform autonomously." Joris Guérin works with faculty members from the LSIS laboratory: Olivier Gibaru, Stéphane Thiery, and Eric Nyiri.
The Fulbright Scholarship, an opportunity to pursue research in the United States
Thanks to the Fulbright program, Joris Guérin spent seven months in Atlanta at the Robot Learning Lab as a visiting student researcher. This scholarship, funded by the United States and the Hauts-de-France region, will enable Joris to finance his travel expenses to attend conferences and meet other research teams. It is also accompanied by a grant from the Arts et Métiers foundation.
After a month in Atlanta, Joris is delighted with his experience: "The lab is on a completely different scale to anything I've been used to. The number of PhD students working on similar topics is impressive and facilitates good collaboration and mutual support. I'm also discovering new and interesting working methods that I'd like to bring back to Lille when I return."
