Samuel Mayer, former student of the MS Eco-design and Environmental Management program, class of 2002
An environmental engineer with a passion for sustainable development, Samuel wanted to specialize in eco-design and sustainable industrial project management.
The Master's in Eco-Design and Environmental Management (ECME) has recently evolved to become the Specialized Master's Degree® in Change Management and Sustainable InnovationIts new content takes into account emerging, more sustainable consumption patterns and the associated economic models. This implies global changes within the company that must be learned to implement and manage.
Continue your master's degree while keeping your job
With a degree in environmental chemical engineering under his belt, Samuel first worked as an environmental engineer at Timet Savoie in Ugine in the metallurgy sector. He then enrolled in the ECME Specialized Master's program at the Chambéry institute while continuing to work at Timet.
After an internship at Steelcase as part of his master's degree, he worked at the St Etienne Chamber of Commerce and Industry, then developed an eco-design consulting business under the name Sustenere.
Since 2009, he has been the director of the National Eco-design and Life Cycle Management Center ( a non-profit organization under the French law of 1901). The center raises awareness and facilitates access to eco-design initiatives for small and medium-sized businesses. It also works to promote eco-design in companies.
Recent developments in MS supported by the Eco-design Cluster
"Beyond technical skills in eco-design and life cycle assessment (LCA), the MS program allowed me to develop significantly in terms of complex project management and leadership."
As for the recent shift in MS towards Change Management and Sustainable Innovation, he believes it is a step in the right direction: "Eco-innovation and the new economic models driven by the green economy are revolutionizing management and organizational methods, and quite simply the processes involved in developing products and services." This is an initiative that the Eco-Design cluster has decided to support.
A new MS for new concepts
Samuel's advice to prospective applicants: "Make the most of this year of training to open your mind to all these new concepts and take advantage of the institute's network to make yourself known."
