On October 17, Arts et Métiers an industrial chair in Lille with Valeo dedicated to studying nonlinear vibration phenomena in future automotive transmissions in order to improve passenger comfort.

Arts et Métiers Valeo, partners in the industrial chair dedicated to the vibration dynamics of automotive transmission chains.

After three years of collaboration between the Arts et Métiers teams Arts et Métiers those at Valeo's Amiens site (Transmission Systems), and the completion of a doctoral thesis, formalized by the publication of research articles and patents, technology transfers, and ongoing industrialization, the partnership between Arts et Métiers Valeo has taken the form of an industrial chair. This five-year chair will engage in thesis work, post-doctoral research, and engineering training, and will organize events for scientific dissemination and exchange. For Prof. Olivier Thomas, specialist in vibration mechanics at Arts et Métiers holder of the chair:

This particular subject of nonlinear vibrational dynamics has enabled the creation of scientific knowledge, but also rapid technological transfer and industrialization.

Mastering nonlinear vibration phenomena: a lever for innovation studied by the chair

Olivier Thomas, holder of the Arts et Métiers Valeo industrial chairIn order to improve passenger comfort on board a vehicle, controlling noise and vibration in the various components developed by Valeo in the powertrain is a prerequisite. The team at Laboratory of Physical and Digital Systems Engineering (LISPEN EA 7515) from Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Lille, as a specialist in nonlinear vibration phenomena, develops calculation and optimization techniques dedicated to these systems. Valeo's activities thus represent an extremely rich field of application for Prof. Olivier Thomas.

Nonlinear vibration phenomena are still poorly understood. Engineers' practices are often still limited to the design of linear systems. One of the chair's objectives is to master these nonlinear phenomena in order to open up new possibilities, enabling the design of more efficient technical objects.
