Evolutive Learning Factories

Last June, the Metz campus received the Fonds Vert Territoires d'industrie en transition écologique (Green Fund for Industries in Ecological Transition) award from the French government for its "Green Evolutive Learning Factory project. This award highlights the exemplary nature of this project.

On the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Metz, the Green Evolutive Learning Factory ELF) is being rolled out to train engineers and technicians to meet the challenges of the ecological transition.

The Green Fund Award for Industrial Territories in Ecological Transition: Recognition from the State

Of the 160 projects financed by the State Green Fund, six were chosen for their exemplary nature. The Metz campus, with its new Materials and Energy Institute, won an award in the "Development of ecological transition professions" category.

Marc Ferracci, Minister for Industry and Energy, and François Rebsamen, Minister for Regional Planning and Decentralization, presented the award to Stéphane Fontaine, Director of the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Metz.

Developing "green transition professions"

The award-winning project aims to expand the Metz campus's training facility to educate talented individuals who will support environmental and technological transitions in industry, particularly in the field of carbon-free metallurgy.

Students will examine the entire value chain of a manufactured product: choice of materials, transformation processes, energy management, end-of-life scenarios, recycling, eco-design, life cycle assessment (LCA), energy efficiency, etc., while taking into account the optimization of energy management at an industrial site and its facilities.

A new final year of the Grande École Program"Decarbonized Materials and Energy for a Sustainable Industry"will open its doors at the start of the 2025 academic year. A Bachelor's degree in "Materials and Energy" will open at the start of the 2026 academic year.

Training courses designed in collaboration with two industrial partners: ArcelorMittal Research and VINCI Energies

To meet real skills needs, these training programs are designed with a strong industrial focus:

  • The program and the targeted skills were developed jointly with ArcelorMittal Maizières Research and VINCI Energies.
  • The training courses will be co-taught by academic experts Arts et Métiers industry experts, notably from ArcelorMittal Maizières Research and VINCI Energies.
  • Students will alternate between periods at school and periods in companies under apprenticeship or professional training contracts, thanks to the supportof AMTalents, the CFA subsidiaryArts et Métiers.
  • Students will work on a common project to create an industrial product. To do so, they will use the equipment available at the Green ELF on the Metz campus.

The green ELF, a training facility dedicated to the life cycle of industrial products

To support the development of these new courses, the Metz campus is acquiring equipment, financed in particular by the State as part of the Green Fund.

Among the expected investments:

  • Retrofitting of the hydraulic press on the VULCAIN material forming platform,
  • The acquisition of an embroidery machine and a heat press as part of the EPITHER project, enabling the shaping of long-fiber thermoplastic and carbon composite materials.
  • The development of an educational platform for automation and building energy management: Phi-Tau-center, a true center of energy expertise.
  • An atomization tower and an X-ray diffractometer to facilitate end-of-life treatment of materials as part of the Green Steel project.

The deployment of green ELF fuels the new Materials and Energy Institute set up in partnership with ArcelorMittal Research and VINCI Energies.

The Materials and Energy Institute (IME) project has been selected as part of the regionalized France 2030 call for proposals (PIA4), under the heading "Innovation and Vocational Training Projects."
