This Thursday, January 31, will see the fifth edition of the Chal'enge Challenge. The idea is to ask MTI3D research master's students to create virtual and augmented reality simulators to meet the needs of businesses. Some of the winners have been hired, while others are starting their own businesses. We look back on five years of the challenge with Jean-Rémy Chardonnet, head of the MTI3D master's program atthe Institut Image in Chalon-sur-Saône.
The Chal'enge Challenge has been running for five years now, enabling students on the MTI3D research master's program to apply the knowledge they have acquired to benefit businesses in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.
Success and recognition are on the cards. Twenty-seven companies took part, and for the past two years, the University Institute of Technology (IUT) in Chalon-sur-Saône has been offering its students enrolled in the professional bachelor's degree program in "Image and Sound Techniques and Activities" the opportunity to compete in the "Communication (web, videos)" category.
Master's students at the Institut Image in Chalon-sur-Saône are creating simulators and demonstrators using augmented reality and virtual reality. It wouldn't be a challenge if it weren't for the two-week deadline for completion in pairs.
This year, the public will be able to see the students' results on January 31 at 2 p.m. at Nicéphore Cité in Chalon-sur-Saône. The public will choose their favorite project and award it the People's Choice Award after testing a few simulators, such as one that allows users to discover:
- Inside a watch mechanism developed for AFPA and its watchmaking training program in Besançon
- kitchens for Schmidt Kitchens
- a digital orientation table for the panoramic exhibition hall atthe Espace des Arts in Chalon-sur-Saône.
- a vine pruning simulator for Educagi Editions
- and other projects developed for the French Red Cross, the Chamber of Agriculture 71, Zootechnics Division, Industrial Molds and Models (MMI), andthe Roche driving school.
The Chal'enge challenge is a springboard for master's students, but also for companies undergoing digital transformation.
Jean-Rémy Chardonnet, academic director of the MTI3D Research Master's program in Chalon-sur-Saône, is co-organizing the Challenge with Grand Chalon, the Saône-et-Loire Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Nicéphore Cité. "The Chal'enge Challenge is a real springboard for our students to find jobs in the field of virtual reality, but also for companies as an accelerator of digital transition."
Jean-Rémy remembers in particular:
- Ramy RZEM, who participated in the first edition and was hired by Engie Cofely as a software engineer as soon as he graduated. He had developed a3D animation to promote energy monitoring software with his classmate Hamza Messalaha. The aim of this project is to create a promotional application for building energy management software.
- Louis Jeannin and Nicolas Galiguiri, winners of two awards in the fourth edition. They developed a program for La Poste that allows users of the smartphone app to quickly and easily find the right package size in just two clicks based on a photo of the item. Today, Louis and Nicolas want to set up their own start-up. They have lots of ideas, but "education will play a major role," says Louis.
