Thesis defense by Benjamin Vaissier, doctoral student at the LISPENlaboratory: "Advanced modeling and multifunctional optimization of supports for additive manufacturing processes."

Summary

Although Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies enable the production of complex parts that are difficult or even impossible to produce using traditional processes, certain manufacturing constraints must be met. In order to overcome the problems of material collapse or geometric deformation inherent in these processes, the addition of manufacturing supports is required. The addition of these structures, which are generally removed during manual post-production steps, represents a significant cost (material used, digital generation time, machine production, and removal during finishing). Their optimization is therefore essential to ensure that the manufactured geometry complies with dimensional requirements, but also to reduce the cost price of the final part.

Following a specific analysis of the various functions and issues associated with AM manufacturing supports, four main areas were identified and addressed in this work:

  • (i) Genetic algorithm optimization was first studied in order to support undercut areas using tree structures.
  • (ii) A model for estimating manufacturing deformations was then developed in order to generate stiffening supports with variable thickness.
  • (iii) a methodology for parameterizing lattice structures has been proposed in order to dissipate the energy accumulated in the massive areas of the part,
  • Finally, (iv) the development of an encoding strategy that exploits the repetitive patterns present in the manufacturing media has made it possible to reduce the size of their definition files in order to streamline their handling and processing throughout the AM production chain.
