On Sunday, August 25, 2019, Nicolas Fleury, a sophomore in the Grande Ecole Engineering Programme Arts et Métiers Arts et Métiers on the Arts et Métiers campus, finished 16th in a round of the Mountain Bike Trials World Cup in Italy. Following this performance, the French national team coach invited Nicolas to compete in the World Championships, which will take place on November 10 in Chengdu, China.
Nicolas joined Arts et Métiers 2018 after completing a preparatory class inphysics and technology. He chose the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Cluny for three reasons: its geographical proximity, the third-year expertise in the field of machining and woodworking, and the rich student life.
His career at Arts et Métiers
- In his first year, he studied Sports, Health, and Disability and is leading the "scooter" project with the city of Mâcon, aimed at young people from disadvantaged neighborhoods.
- In his second year, he wants to pursue a vocational project in the field of woodworking.
- In the third year, the Innovation Management (MANAGINOV) program in Angers or the New Energy Management (SYSPEC) programin Lillewill be his first choices.
After graduating, he plans to attend business school and then pursue a career in renewable energy.
What qualities did he develop both during his studies at Arts et Métiers in his career as a top-level athlete?
Perseverance: sports trainers teach him to focus, never give up, and see things through to the end. School has allowed him to get to know his competition partner better: his bike. Nicolas discovers how it is assembled, the processes and materials used to manufacture its components.
Setting goals and ambitions to achieve : Sports competitions take place on specific dates. His goal is to be trained and ready for the big day, just like when he was in prep school and had to be ready for exams and competitions. This forces him to optimize his organization and juggle his two activities. He faces the same constraints at Arts et Métiers, but feels better prepared to find a balance to succeed in both areas.
Open-mindedness: he gained this through his travels. Nicolas has acquired maturity, an understanding of different cultures, and foreign language skills. He finds this on the Cluny campus with his classmates, who represent 13 different nationalities, and through his international experience, which is an important step in his training as an Arts et Métiers engineer.
