For their first internship, three first-year students in the Bachelor of Technology program at the Châlons-en-Champagne campus chose to go international.
For four weeks, Silouan THORNTON, Adrien BAUER, and Maxime CHARPENTIER had the opportunity to develop their skills in diverse professional environments: Estonia for Silouan, Nigeria for Maxime, and the United Kingdom for Adrien. Maxime and Silouan reflect on this enriching experience.
Immersion in the oil industry in Nigeria
Maxime completed his internship at Aveon Offshore, a Port Harcourt-based company specializing in the manufacture and assembly of oil and gas platforms. This immersion allowed him to discover cutting-edge industrial processes, ranging from metal plate cutting to machining and industrial welding. "I had the opportunity to follow the entire manufacturing process and work alongside passionate technicians and engineers who enthusiastically explained their jobs to me, "says Maxime.
Beyond the technical skills I acquired, this internship was a memorable human experience. "The working atmosphere was excellent, and I discovered a local culture based on strong human relationships. The preconceived ideas I had about this country were swept away as soon as I arrived,"he says. The internship also allowed him to improve his English and enrich his technical vocabulary. This successful first experience abroad will be a valuable asset for the rest of his career.
Digital design and machining in Estonia
For his part, Silouan joined BLRT Masinaehitus OÜ, an Estonian company specializing in the production of industrial metal structures. His internship focused on advanced machining and digital modeling technologies. "I had the opportunity to create a digital clone of a welding station incorporating a robotic arm and a turntable, using MotoSIM software, " explains Silouan.
At his supervisor's request, he also worked on designing 3D models and producing technical drawings for a client using SolidEdge software. "Thanks to the support of operators and engineers, I learned a lot about machine tools, milling machines, and CNC lathes, as well as the preparatory steps before production, " he explains. This experience allowed Silouan to strengthen his computer-aided design (CAD) skills and perfect his knowledge of industrial manufacturing.
A first step towards international expansion
For Maxime and Silouan, going abroad for an internship is a real opportunity. Much more than just professional immersion, this experience has opened their eyes to the world, both technically and culturally. Not only have they perfected their skills, but they have also broadened their horizons, strengthened their independence, and discovered new cultures.
Whether in Nigeria or Estonia, this adventure allowed them to step outside their comfort zone, gain independence, and enrich their academic and personal development. It is an experience they would recommend to all students.
