How does one get involved in the study of aerodynamics and wind energy, and what impact can this field have on the energy transition? We’ll discuss this with Fawaz Massouh, Professor Emeritus at the Laboratory of Fluid Engineering and Energy Systems (LIFSE), one of six laboratories located on the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Paris. We’ll also talk with him about other aspects of his work.

Who is Fawaz Massouh?
He holds a degree in civil engineering from the University of Damascus in Syria, a Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies in aerodynamics from the Institute of Fluid Mechanics in Marseille, and a doctorate in engineering awarded by Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris in 1979. Fawaz Massouh earned his State Doctorate in Physical Sciences from the same institution in 1984.
The focus of his doctoral research is pressure waves in pipelines. This topic has various practical applications, ranging from cardiovascular biomechanics to blood flow.
During the development of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle program, Fawaz Massouh coordinated a Thematic Research Group (TRG) established by CNES to study hydraulic transients in the liquid propellant circuits of the Vulcan engine during the startup phase.
Fawaz Massouh joined Arts et Métiers Paris in 1979 as a faculty member and researcher; he remained there until his retirement in 2018. As a professor emeritus, he continues to be involved in research and international relations.
