Summary
During the initial processing of wood at the sawmill, logs are surfaced or squared by milling heads called slabbing machines or canters. These machines break the wood chips into small pieces, the utilization of which is a major challenge for the industry. As the most lucrative outlet for this resource, the pulp industry imposes dimensional criteria on the chips supplied, particularly with regard to their thickness. The aim of the study is therefore to improve understanding of the mechanisms involved in wood cutting, in a simplified orthogonal cutting configuration, in order to optimize the particle size of the chips produced. An experimental cutting campaign using a numerically controlled machine tool was carried out on green beech in order to determine the main mechanisms involved. A simplified mechanical model of the dynamic behavior of green wood was determined in order to develop a numerical model of green wood using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to simulate its cutting. A preliminary study was conducted to determine the method's ability to model highly orthotropic media at the mesoscopic scale. Once its capabilities and limitations had been demonstrated, the digital model calibration process was developed and the model was tested in a digital orthogonal cutting configuration. The initial simulations show encouraging results.
