An encounter, a spark, an injury... choosing to compete in a sport is a very personal journey that requires perseverance, courage, and determination.perseverance, courage, and determination.
Thomas and Célian talk about how they thrive in a demanding but exciting sport.

How did your athletic career unfold (from choosing this sport to reaching your current level)?

Thomas: I chose athletics quite late in life after more than eight years of basketball. I was spotted by a coach who took me to the French championships before I entered preparatory class.

Célian: Following a serious fracture of the tibia and fibula five years ago, the most effective rehabilitation option was mountain biking. A year of getting back into shape allowed me to develop a taste for enduro (a competitive off-road cycling discipline) and adrenaline. Combining this sport with my studies requires a certain amount of organizational skill so that I don't get overwhelmed by events. Enduro is a very time-consuming sport, both in terms of training (and traveling to the spots) and in terms of mechanics and physical preparation.

How does Arts et Métiers help Arts et Métiers achieve your goals?

Thomas: It was when I joined Arts et Métiers I fully immersed myself in the discipline and set a new personal best (10 km in 34'48"). As the campus is located near an athletics stadium, I quickly became president of the athletics association, which allowed me to discover a new facet of my sport by sharing my passion. I really enjoyed setting up training sessions for students of various levels, ranging from simply getting back into sport to preparing for a specific goal. Training alone at times also strengthened my mental attitude and motivation during competitions.

Célian: Enrolling in the specialized engineering work-study program guarantees me financial independence in my working life and also allows me to cover the costs associated with my hobby, such as purchasing various high-end bikes (enduro, downhill, road), protective gear, and consumables (tires, brake pads, etc.), even though I have some partners who support me. Sharing my passion on social media requires investment in multimedia equipment, which is also expensive.

What does practicing a high-level sport bring you?

Thomas: Willpower, perseverance, and discipline are all qualities that I have developed through athletics and that I put to good use in my studies. I am now looking forward to taking my training to the next level, which I will continue next year at Imperial College London, with new sporting goals, including the university championships in England.

Célian: In addition to extraordinary trips to discover incredible spots, enduro is a new sport that is truly focused on sharing. Although there is a strong competitive spirit, there is nothing more enjoyable than sharing your experience with complete strangers around a campfire in the mountains, or having a drink with the enduro rider who was your main rival on the trails just an hour earlier!
