A project of public interest, materials, and elbow grease... that's what first-year students at the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Cluny have at their disposal to take on the Grand Défi, a key moment in the integration of new students.

Completed in just 24 hours, the project aims to improve public spaces in the city. This year, 158 first-year students from the Grande Ecole Program worked on landscaping the esplanade and the Chemin des Quinconces, which connects the Chemin de la Chaîne to Rue Anne-Marie Javouhey.

An initial phase of weeding prepared the site for the complete renovation of the staircase leading to the Esplanade des Quinconces. The steps were leveled to achieve uniform heights, delimited by the insertion of horizontal logs and filled with geotextile and gravel. The second part of the challenge is to build a path on the Esplanade des Quinconces. After marking out the access area, the students dug a 54-meter-long, 2-meter-wide trench, laid paving stones on the sides, and backfilled with gravel. The town of Cluny is supporting the project by providing marquees, lighting, and sanitary facilities.

Once again, it's a successful challenge for the class of 2023.
