Hiba, president, Clara, secretary, and Louise, head of the Aix branch and member of the Environment division, discuss their association's projects.ADDAM is a mutual support network forArts et Métiers PhD graduates and doctoral studentsArts et Métiers the integration of young PhD graduatesArts et Métiers the workforce.
What is the purpose of this association?
Founded in 2009, its purpose is tobring together and supportArts et Métiers PhDs and doctoral students, to help them build a network of contacts, to promote doctoral studies among engineering students, to defend their interests with the Doctoral School, and to foster a vibrant laboratory environment by organizing events to improve cohesion among doctoral students.
"PThere are several levels of involvement possible : simply being a member, paying the annual membership fee of €20, and taking advantage of the association's deals and services, or getting more involved and participating in the organization by joining the board," explains Clara, secretary of ADDAM,the federation of the various campuses is still an area for improvement that the association is looking into, as is the organization of inter-campus travel. The board, which is mainly based in Paris, will visit the various campuses to forge links."
The board is elected for a one-year term and generally meets every week. Meetings are accessible from all campuses in hybrid mode (in person/video conference).
The association currently has 60 members.
The former offices helped create the backbone of the association, and our ambition is to help it grow and expand. Hiba, president of the association
What are the association's objectives and projects?
ADDAM seeks to raise awareness in order to promote doctoral studies and its activities.
It participates in the annual Arts et Métiers Forum. It organizes informational seminars, particularly on environmental topics, which are open to all. The last two seminarsseminars focused on composite recycling and the challenges of land use change.
New members are integrated through the organization of team-building events (weekends, afternoons, hikes, various outings, etc.) to facilitate the lives of doctoral students in the laboratories on all campuses.
A team-building weekend is offered every year at the beginning of the academic year, bringing together doctoral students from all campuses to meet and freely exchange ideas through roundtable discussions on their theses between doctors and doctoral students from different years.
President Hiba adds: "Every year, we have plans to purchase equipment that is useful to everyone in our thesis work, such as a plotter for printing the posters we use at conferences, a freely accessible projection kit, and goodies to help new doctoral students settle in."
What are your outlook and plans for the current term?
Hiba explains: "Our plans for our term of office are as follows: creating a directory of members who have been involved with the association, organizing Fresque du Climat workshops to raise awareness across laboratories, organizing a quarterly Environment seminar, continuing our participation in the Arts et Métiers Forum Arts et Métiers organizing team-building events, developing a functional website with the help of engineering students, and obtaining stable financial support from the laboratories on the various campuses."
Three keywords to describe the association and its objectives?
Assemble, support, facilitate.
Meet Louise, a doctoral student at the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers , head of the Aix branch, and member of the association's Environment division.
-
What is your academic background?
After two years of preparatory classes (PCSI/PSI), I enrolled at the Phelma - Grenoble INP engineering school and studied Materials Science and Engineering. In October 2021, I began my thesis at the MSMP (Mechanics, Surfaces & Materials) laboratory on the Aix campus, entitled "Analysis and modeling of mechanical impact compaction of coatings for corrosion resistance." This is part of a project led by IRT M2P for Safran Aircraft Engines. My thesis is supervised by Laurent Barrallier and co-supervised by Régis Kubler.

Can you explain why you decided to join this association? Why is it important for you to get involved?
I was encouraged by a friend, the former president of the association, to launch the branch on the Aix-en-Provence campus. This made me want to get involved with doctoral students by promoting the work carried out by ADDAM. Arts et Métiers a large institution with several campuses and many laboratories, so it's an opportunity to be seized and developed in order to take advantage of this diversity, create links between doctoral students from different backgrounds, enrich professional relationships, and learn more about what is being done in other laboratories.
Commitment, sharing, environment—these are my watchwords! Louise

You are part of the Environment Division. What are the objectives of this division?
It was this division that also made me want to get involved with ADDAM, as it embodies values that are important to me and that are important to promote today. The Environment division is a new division created a year ago with the aim of raising awareness among doctoral students about environmental issues through, for example, seminars organized with engineers or researchers who present their work on the subject and how to integrate these issues into their business/research. This awareness-raising also involves organizing climate frescoes for all doctoral students, with some of them also being trained in facilitation. This is a project that will start this year.

What measures have been implemented or are planned for the Aix campus?
For now, the main goal is to raise awareness of the association among doctoral students on campus, as well as among faculty members and staff in various laboratories. The more doctoral students who join, the easier it will be to set up projects that we believe will benefit everyone.
In terms of the environment, on the Aix campus we are fortunate to already be involved, if we wish, in various awareness-raising workshops that have been set up (climate murals, biodiversity, digital technology, 2tonnes workshop). Organizing environmental seminars on campus could also be an idea, with speakers from the region, and perhaps in association with Ecogadz, the environmental association for engineering students in the Grande Ecole Program.
ADDAM is a mutual aid network forArts et Métiers PhD students and graduatesArts et Métiers the integration of young PhD graduatesArts et Métiers the workforce. The association aims to promote Arts et Métiers PhD programs, emphasizing scientific excellence and technological expertise in response to current industrial challenges. It defends the interests of PhD students and keeps them informed of developments in their rights. The association also organizes scientific and cultural events that enable doctoral students to exchange ideas with each other and with professionals.
In April 2022, ADDAM signed a partnership agreement with the Arts et Métiers Society of Engineers, giving access to some of their services (excluding Mutual Aid and Job Offers).
