Robin DURIOT, PhD student at LaBoMaP, will defend his thesis on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, on the "Development of Douglas fir LVL products with optimized mechanical properties through the use of online measurement of fiber orientation during peeling."

SUMMARY

Laminated wood offers significant potential for optimizing its mechanical properties compared to glued laminated timber and solid wood due to its nature as a finely laminated material. It is particularly relevant for the valorization of a highly heterogeneous resource such as large French Douglas fir wood. Mechanical characterization tests have shown that this material performs well in construction applications without the need to sort the resource. Performance can be further improved by understanding the influence of wood singularities on local mechanical properties. The integration of a prototype optical scanner based on the tracheid effect into the LaBoMaP peeling line has made it possible to measure the orientation of veneer fibers at industrial speed. Local modeling of the mechanical properties of veneers incorporating this parameter has led to the creation of an alternative sorting methodology to visual sorting, as well as the development of an algorithm aimed at optimizing their distribution within plywood. Finite element modeling has highlighted the shortcomings of analytical modeling when nodosity is high, opening up prospects for better characterization of veneers.
