HUM’AM, the Humanitarian Association of Apprentice EngineersArts et Métiers , is committed to helping people in precarious situations by promoting access to basic resources such as water, electricity, and education. Today, HUM'AM is leading four large-scale projects in which students are fully involved and responsible.
A student initiative that has been running for four years
Every year, a new generation takes charge of the HUM'AM association and brainstorms ideas for a project. Their research focuses on regions experiencing water or electricity shortages. The students draw on technical knowledge gained in their field of study at school and in the workplace: installing wells, solar panels, solar pumping stations, desalination plants, etc.
Driven by values of solidarity, the projects promote equality, mutual aid, and a taste for ambitious projects. In 2020, HUM'AM built the first solar-powered pumping station in Senegal, increasing the amount of water available per person per day from 4 liters to 40 liters.
Today, HUM'AM is leading four large-scale projects in Benin, Madagascar, Cameroon, and Senegal.
Facilitating access to water in Tunisia
The project launched in 2021 is called "Jendoub'Arts," in reference to the Tunisian region where the villages of Jwaawda and Ghardimaou are located. In the village of Jwaawda, and by extension in the region, there are many sources of drinking water and the soil contains numerous aquifers, but these are not being exploited.
The few available water sources are unsanitary and crowded because all the villages in the region come to them for their water supply. Sometimes people have to walk ten kilometers to reach them. It is often women and children who make the round trip, at night, on foot or by donkey.
The "Jendoub'Arts" project will focus on three areas:
- Restore, develop, and properly operate the existing sources in Difleya and Kermet El Maala to better distribute resources among residents.
- Establish an inter-school partnership to collect computer equipment, clothing, and school supplies for schools in the region.
- Inaugurate a cooperative farm for single women in the village of Ghardimaou, which will provide a stable and fair source of income and enable them to become financially independent and responsible.
