Arts et Métiers, through its LAMPA (Laboratoire Angevin de Mécanique, Procédés et innovAtion) research laboratory located on the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers , and the CEA have signed a three-year partnership agreement. The aim is to offer companies innovative methods for characterizing the durability of materials under severe mechanical and environmental stresses, a major challenge for competitiveness and environmental responsibility.

Lifespan, recyclability, limited environmental impact, performance: today, the sustainability of materials must combine quality, cost, and control of our resources. For example, fatigue and/or corrosion failures account for nearly 75% of all failures of mechanical components or structures in service.

By signing this agreement, the CEA and Arts et Métiers, through its subsidiary AMVALOR andthe Carnot ARTS Institute, with the support of the Pays de la Loire Region, are combining their expertise and cutting-edge equipment. The aim is to offer their partners the opportunity to model and predict the durability of materials in harsh environments (high pressure, humidity, wind, saline environments, etc.), improve their resistance to stress, qualify manufacturing processes, and better design the dimensions of structures.

CESAM, a testing platform for studying the durability of metallic and composite materials under stress

This collaboration is based in particular on the joint management of research and development activities relating to the assessment of material health through "fatigue X-ray tomographic inspection" and "fatigue corrosion." Today, this joint management is reflected in the co-development of a testing platform, launched in October 2020, called CESAM.
Comprising several high-tech devices, it enables manufacturers to improve the link between the manufacturing process and the service life of parts, for example by observing the effects of corrosion using salt spray equipment, the propagation of cracks in a material during a fatigue test using X-ray imaging, etc.

One partnership, multiple actions

To roll out their joint offering and develop synergies for the benefit of manufacturers, this agreement will be based on both:

  • technological development activities involving the development of in situ and real-time characterization tests;
  • upstream research activities driven by industrial issues surrounding product lifecycle management;
  • partnership-based innovation initiatives to accelerate the implementation of solutions in industry;
  • recruitment of doctoral students or postdoctoral researchers.
