As part of their second-year project, Cyrille, Tristan, Paul, Lynda, Joachim, and Stanislas studied energy consumption at the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Lille. Their goal was to identify simple ways to reduce it.
How can Arts et Métiers engineering students take action for the environment Arts et Métiers After discussing the issue with their teachers, students in Lille came up with their own answer. They began by focusing on their immediate environment: the campus. "This project is part of a broader initiative by our group and, more generally, by the students in our class to take simple steps and fight small battles for the environment."
This study, launched at the end of September 2019, consisted of several phases. "We began with a state-of-the-art assessment of the situation in order to gather all the relevant data and information: the school's consumption over the course of the year, the lighting technology used in the classrooms, lighting standards for educational establishments, and a list of energy-intensive machines. This enabled us to target specific and significant areas to begin our study," explain the members of the group.
Several objectives were then defined:
- Measure consumption in significant areas: computer room, CAD room, and coffee machines.
- Modeling classroom lighting in compliance with standards using low-energy technologies
- Launch an awareness campaign to remind people of simple actions they can take to save energy.
"This project taught us how to work independently and allowed us to explore all aspects and skills necessary for project management: drafting specifications, meeting with professionals, and collecting data in the field," emphasize the future engineers.
We have become even more aware of environmental issues and have started with simple everyday actions: turning off lights, shutting down computers when we finish work, waiting until the dishwasher is full before running it, or unplugging the refrigerator when we go on vacation. Energy transition and sustainable development are issues that our generation is very aware of. As future players in the industrial world, we are committed to placing these issues at the center of our interests and decisions.
