Clément Bourlet, PhD student at LCFC and LEM3, will defend his thesis entitled "Development of arc-wire additive manufacturing for steels: microstructural and mechanical characterization of ER100 and 316L deposits for the validation of the service properties of industrial parts" on Friday, December 13 at 10 a.m. on the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Metz. This CIFRE thesis was funded bythe Institut de Soudure.

The thesis work focuses on the use of wire arc welding technology as a new metal additive manufacturing process for industrial applications, particularly in the production of prototypes, single parts, and small series.

Summary

"Arc-fil is a new additive manufacturing process that uses a robotic welding cell to manufacture large parts layer by layer. It can be used to produce prototypes of single parts or small series with reduced manufacturing costs and lead times.

Initial developments focused mainly on the production of high value-added parts made of titanium and aluminum alloys for the aeronautics and aerospace sectors, and are now of interest to other sectors such as the naval, oil, railway, and mechanical industries that use steel.

This work proposes a methodology for selecting parameters and deposition strategies, with final inspection of the manufactured parts. It focuses on two materials: a high yield strength C-Mn steel (ER100) and an austenitic stainless steel (316LSi).

The results of the characterizations make it possible to establish the link between the manufacturing conditions, the geometric dimensions, and the microstructural and mechanical properties of the parts obtained, which ultimately leads to an approach that allows the process to be developed for industrialization.

Practical information

Clément Bourlet, welding engineer specializing in materials

A graduate Arts et Métiers, Clément Bourlet also holds a Master of Science (MAGIS) in Materials and Engineering Sciences in Paris, a materials-focused program offered at the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Paris.
After earning these degrees, he spent a year atthe École Supérieure du Soudage et de ses Applications (ESSA), where he obtained a degree in welding engineering as well as the IWE certificate for international welding engineers.
His background and the completion of his thesis have established him as a specialist in wire arc welding as a metal additive manufacturing process. It is in this capacity that he currently serves atthe Institut de Soudure.
