On Thursday, March 19, students in the Grande École Program at the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Lille had the opportunity to visit the L’Oréal factory in Caudry—one of the group’s production sites for its “skincare” lines—as part of the sponsorship agreement between L’Oréal and Arts et Métiers. It was a packed day, rich in learning and technical discoveries, which allowed the students to immerse themselves in the industrial reality of the world leader in cosmetics.
Industry in the Service of Luxury: A Tour of the L’Oréal Factory in Caudry for Students in the Grande École Program at the Lille Campus
An introduction to how the site works and the group's commitments
The tour began with a presentation on the L’Oréal Group, the Caudry plant, and its strategic role in the production of skincare lines. The students learned about the many national and international certifications and labels the facility has earned, which serve as a true testament to its quality and compliance with international standards.
The teams also highlighted the site’s social and environmental commitments: reducing its carbon footprint, optimizing energy use, implementing inclusive HR policies, and promoting workplace well-being… All of these initiatives reflect the sustainable transition underway within the group.
An immersion in the heart of industrial expertise
Following this introduction, the students had the opportunity to explore every corner of the factory, learning about the various stages of the manufacturing process for L’Oréal products:
Centralized weighing
A critical stage where all raw materials are weighed with great precision—an essential step in the production of the emulsions that will form the basis of future products.
Ergonomics for operators
The students learned how the factory was completely redesigned to prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).
Notable measures include:
- the rule that a worker may not carry more than 10 kg on their own
- significant investments in assistive technology
- an ongoing risk assessment that allows for continuous adaptation of workstations
An overview of standards and certifications
The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss the French and international standards governing production: quality, hygiene, safety, the environment, and more. It was a true immersion into the demanding world of regulated production.
Production and packaging lines
A highlight of the visit that the students particularly enjoyed was seeing the production and packaging lines where the products take their final form before being shipped around the world.
The students were able to observe firsthand the combination of human effort and technology required to ensure production speed, quality, and traceability.
A formative and inspiring experience
This hands-on experience allowed the students to grasp the full complexity of a state-of-the-art industrial facility: workflow management, strict standards, automation, work organization, and continuous innovation.
They leave with a clear understanding of the realities on the ground, as well as the production process behind each product.
A big thank you to the teams at L’Oréal for their warm welcome, their explanations, and their willingness to help, especially to Pierre Voisin, Frédéric Blondelle, Marie Houriez, and Brahim Lakri!
