Tuesday, April 24, 2018 saw the first edition of the public speaking competition atArts et Métiers. Five engineering students from the Cluny campus prepared for a month and had seven minutes to convince the jury and the audience.
A training gallop
"Science finds remedies more easily than answers."
"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."
"Technology is a fabulous thing that makes people boring."
"If you don't like the sea, if you don't like the mountains, if you don't like the city... Go fuck yourself!"
The respective quotes from Jean de Rostand, Leonardo da Vinci, Daniel Godin and Jean-Paul Belmondo inspired the challengers. Each in turn, and some even in pairs, were able to test their public speaking skills and their quick-wittedness in front of the audience and jury. This was an exercise in style, but also a training run that will be useful to them when defending their internshipand final projects or thesis.
And the winner is...
The jury, composed of the campus director, the head of industrial relations, the librarian, and two engineering students, was impressed by Louis Janisset, a second-year General Engineering. Passionate about making handmade knives, he demonstrated that his mind is as sharp as his work. He chose a quote from Jean-Paul Belmondo: "If you don't like the sea, if you don't like the mountains, if you don't like the city... Go fuck yourself!"
The public, meanwhile, chose to reward Arnaud Ringot, a first-year student, and his argument based on a quote by Daniel Godin : "Technology is a fabulous thing that makes people boring."
After finishing school, Louis wants to work in cutlery and Arnaud in prosthetics.
With this contest, I wanted to put myself in danger, explains Arnaud.
This first edition was very well received and will undoubtedly be repeated next year!
