3D printing, design, and casting: Four engineering students from the Cluny “ Arts et Métiers ” campus helped create a new cast-iron blackbird statue destined to take its place in the Cluny landscape. This hands-on project combines technical expertise with local heritage.
From 3D Printing to Foundry Work
A new blackbird now watches over Rue du Merle in Cluny. Four engineering students fromArts et Métiers, supervised by lecturer and researcher Alexis Vaucheret, worked on the creation of this piece.
The students were involved in several stages of the manufacturing process, from 3D printing to model design, before the final part was produced through casting.
This new blackbird replaces the one that had disappeared and allows this unique part of Cluny’s heritage to take its rightful place once again. Originally in its cage, the blackbird now stands above its cage
A Project Connecting the Campus and the City
The project also highlights the connections between the Arts et Métiers campus and its surrounding area.
The inauguration was attended by, among others, the mayor of Cluny, Jean-François Demongeot, several elected officials, and the director of the Cluny campus of the Arts et Métiers , Radjesvarane Alexandre.
On this occasion, the mayor praised “this magnificent achievement, made possible with the participation of Gadz’Arts.”
Beyond the finished product, the project serves as a concrete example of how the skills acquired and developed at Arts et Métiers can contribute to a project rooted in the local community.
From modeling to casting, the students drew on their skills to help the blackbird reclaim its place in the Cluny landscape.
