Evolutive Learning Factories

The goal of the partnership formed with École Estienne is to foster dialogue between the industrial sector, graphic design, and sustainable transition. This collaboration aims to promote the “Evolutive Learning Factories ” (ELF).

To raise awareness of technological, social, and environmental issues, Arts et Métiers is partnering with École Estienne on a collaboration that combines applied arts, science outreach, and the “ Evolutive Learning Factories ” (ELF). “This is the first time we’ve established this type of partnership, and we’re very excited,” says Fanny Lachat, project manager at D2ELF.

A public institution of higher education located in Paris’s 13th arrondissement, École Estienne offers one of the few French degree programs dedicated to scientific illustration, with its Bachelor’s Degree ( Master of Science ) in Illustration & Mediation. The one-year partnership with Arts et Métiers is structured around two components: hosting a second-year student in the “ Master of Science ” program on a work-study basis for one year, and a group project assigned to first-year students, which they must submit in November.

A New Take on the ELF

As part of her work-study program, Adélie Ternisien is working on the design of a graphic concept to showcase the industrial technologies developed at the ELFs, while highlighting their cross-disciplinary approach to ecological and social transitions. “I hope my work will help attract new students who might have held onto an outdated image of industry but who are interested in sustainable development and social issues, ” she explains.

Various ideas are currently being explored, such as creating a pop-up book that traces the different stages of a product’s life cycle or producing augmented murals. “The mural format would allow for multiple levels of interpretation: a physical level, created using recycled materials specific to each campus, and additional digital levels accessible by scanning the mural or experiencing it with a virtual reality headset, ” explains Adélie Ternisien.

Beyond the graphic design itself, the project aims to invent new ways of telling the story of industry. “For me, that’s also the role of our two schools: to be pioneers and to propose a new industrial graphic language , she adds.

Rethinking the ELF Game

At the same time, the twelve first-year students in the Illustration, Science, and Outreach program ( Master of Science ) will work on improving the ELF game. This serious game allows players to explore how a factory is organized while raising awareness of the various industrial steps involved in designing a product. Although it is already being used in workshops and outreach events, it is still in its early stages.

“We have two goals and two target audiences for this game, explains Daniela Rodriguez, project manager at D2ELF. “On the one hand, it helps us raise awareness among schoolchildren about the complexity of production, which young people often don’t fully understand. On the other hand, it’s used with new students atArts et Métiers to help them better understand how workspaces are organized in industry—and more specifically, within theEvolutive Learning Factory on their campus.”

Estienne’s students will not only have to propose illustrations for the game, but also consider adding physical elements, such as a game box, a game board, or tokens. Among the four proposals that will be submitted, the selection will also be based on their feasibility for in-house production, such as the ability to 3D-print the components.

“We can’t wait to see what the students come up with, to play the new ELF game, and to admire Adélie’s creations!” concluded Fanny Lachat.
