Arts et Métiers the appointment of Jérôme Pailhès as director of its Bordeaux-Talence campus. A university professor, renowned researcher, and dedicated advocate for the academic and industrial development of the Bordeaux campus, he takes on this role with the goal of enhancing the campus’s reputation and supporting major technological transitions.
An academic and scientific background at the heart of industrial challenges
A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure de Cachan and a certified teacher of mechanics, Jérôme Pailhès holds a Ph.D. in mechanics focusing on the behavior of carbon-carbon composites. He began his career in 1997 at the Bordeaux-Talence campus, becoming an associate professor in 2001 and a full professor in 2017.
His research, conducted primarily at I2M*, focuses on innovative design, system optimization, and multiphysics approaches.
The author of numerous scientific publications, he is also known for his involvement in collaborative research projects, working closely with academic and industrial partners, particularly in the aerospace sector.
Deeply committed to education, he has been in charge of the Specialized Master’s® program since 2014 Aeronautical and Space Project Manager at the Bordeaux-Talence campus and has helped implement innovative teaching methods, notably through the EMIRE platform, an augmented and virtual reality platform.

A vision focused on innovation, social cohesion, and regional development
Building on this experience, Jérôme Pailhès aims to ensure continuity and further development during his tenure , building on the initiatives launched by his predecessor, Xavier Aubard, particularly in the areas of corporate relations and the development of the innovation ecosystem within the Bordeaux university campus.
“My goal is to build on the momentum we’ve gained in recent years, particularly by further strengthening our ties with the local industrial community. We must continue to develop strong partnerships with businesses, while reinforcing the synergies between education, research, and innovation. “The Bordeaux-Talence campus has a key role to play in supporting major technological shifts, particularly in the fields of aeronautics, energy mix management, the environment, and artificial intelligence, ” adds Jérôme Pailhès.
As such, it aims to fully engage with regional initiatives, particularly through the Bordeaux University Innovation Hub (PUI), in order to strengthen the transfer of research findings to the socio-economic sector and accelerate innovation projects.
Working closely with the I2M research laboratory, technology platforms, and industry partners, Jérôme Pailhès intends to continue developing an innovative environment for scientific research and learning.
To this end, he will rely on transformative initiatives, such as the modernization of buildings andEvolutive Learning Factory ELF), which promotes an immersive, collaborative teaching approach focused on real-world industrial challenges.
