Gabriel Venet, PhD student at the Design, Manufacturing, and Control Laboratory at the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Metz, will defend his thesis entitled "Parametric identification of thermomechanical behavior in hot forging using industrial equipment" on Monday, December 9 at 2:30 p.m.

Gabriel Venet's thesis work focuses on conducting metal characterization tests on industrial machines rather than specialized machines. This is an important issue, as it would enable manufacturers to conduct their own tests, saving them time and money.

Summary

"The main objective of this thesis is to perform parametric identification of a rheological model of hot metal material using experimental data from an industrial press. In the first chapter, the principle of parametric identification is explained. Uniaxial compression tests performed on specialized testing machines are used as case studies. The concepts of cost function selection, design of experiments, and modeling are discussed, along with sensitivity analysis.

The following chapter presents the tools used to conduct the press experiments. Finally, an assessment is made of the heat exchange and friction experienced by the part during the test.

The third chapter focuses on the parametric identification itself. Finite element simulations of compression are performed and compared with experimental tests. The identification results are discussed and compared with the initial proposals from the FORGE® software database and the parameters identified for the same material in Chapter 1. A simulation of a complex part using these different sets of parameters is then compared with the actual forging of this part.

The fourth chapter builds on the findings of the third chapter by performing a parametric identification for the rheology of Inconel 625. An attempt to identify a microstructure model for Inconel based on industrial tests concludes this manuscript."

Gabriel Venet, 1st prize from the jury in the HeSam University final of My Thesis in 180 Seconds

In spring 2019, Gabriel Venet took part in the Ma thèse en 180 secondes (My Thesis in 180 Seconds) competition for the second year running. After several selection stages, he won first prize from the jury in the HeSam University final, enabling him to take part in the national semi-final and then reach the final. To spice up his participation, Gabriel Venet chose to present his thesis in verse.
