SUMMARY

The heat exchangers in new generations of nuclear reactors are made of AISI 316L stainless steel sheets. These compact exchangers improve thermal efficiency and thus energy production. During the manufacturing of the plates, residual stresses appear and can cause distortion. In order to ensure the assembly of these plates, this distortion must be controlled and minimized, mainly by monitoring the evolution of the residual stress field.

The residual stresses generated during the processes preceding machining were measured using various methods. These residual stresses were then incorporated into a numerical distortion model that took into account sequence effects and clamping during machining. The model was experimentally validated using an intelligent experimental device consisting of force sensors integrated into a clamping system developed specifically for the thesis. It also made it possible to study the influence of machining conditions on plate deformation.

Finally, the distortion model developed was used to optimize the machining strategy in order to minimize distortion in industrial sheet metal.
