" Going abroad means discovering new perspectives and a different education system." It was with this philosophy in mind that Samuel MARTIN chose to pursue part of his studies in Canada.
As a student in the Grande École Program supported by the Châlons-en-Champagne campus, Samuel MARTIN seized the opportunity to broaden his academic experience abroad. As part of the options offered through the Canada dual-degree program, he chose to combine a semester of coursework with a capstone internship.
Moving to Canada: A Strategic Choice
For Samuel, studying in Canada was an opportunity to experience a new educational system while improving his skills. So he decided to spend a semester at the University of Sherbrooke. This experience offered him many benefits: a wide range of course options, a flexible schedule that allowed him to explore the country, and affordable tuition.
Adjusting to this educational system was a challenge, but also a great opportunity: “Independence is key here. Classes are mainly lectures, and the tutorials require a high level of personal commitment,” he explains. This approach has encouraged him to become more independent and to better manage his learning.
A professional internship at TLD
To broaden his experience, Samuel decided to extend his stay in Canada with a capstone internship at TLD. As a project manager specializing in methods and continuous improvement, he works on optimizing production, particularly by redesigning the production line layout and creating tailored tools. “This internship is a real adventure. I manage projects from start to finish, from design to prototyping. My team is very supportive but gives me a lot of autonomy, ” he explains. This experience allows him to put the skills he acquired at Arts et Métiers into practice while developing his expertise in an international setting.
A formative experience
Samuel’s experience in Canada is much more than just an academic adventure: it’s a real springboard for his professional future. “International experience is a real asset on a resume. Management in Quebec offers a different perspective on engineering and leadership,” he says. Next year, Samuel will continue his education with a Master’s in Management at ESSEC, with the goal of continuing to work with TLD. Thanks to this immersion in Canada, he was able to turn a university experience into a real asset for his career, while discovering a rewarding human and professional culture. The flexibility of his courses also allowed him to travel across Canada and the United States while pursuing a program tailored to his goals.
Making the Most of Your Time in Canada
If you’re considering a similar experience, Samuel encourages you to take the plunge: “It’s a unique opportunity to discover a new educational system and a different professional environment.” He advises, however, that you prepare thoroughly for your stay, as the administrative procedures can be complicated. Finding an internship can also be a challenge; that’s why he recommends targeting companies with subsidiaries in France to make the search easier. He also advises taking advantage of the Arts et Métiers alumni network, which is very active in Canada, to exchange advice and benefit from their experience.
