Sustainable development at the heart of training!

Sustainable development is also central to the program, particularly through expertise projects (PJE). Here is a concrete example!

Global warming and the impact of humans and their activities on the environment are at the heart of all debates today. As such, the aeronautics sector must adapt to these new challenges by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution.

This is how Pierre Mora and Vincent Vigouroux, third-year students in the Grande École Program specializing in " Future Powertrains, Hybridization, and Fuel Cells " at the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Châlons, chose the PJE: Hybrid Propulsion for Aircraft. Their defense took place on February 3. This project had already been initiated by second-year students in 2019-2020.

The objective was to model a hybrid engine in order to size components such as batteries, electric motors, etc. Developing this engine would enable mechanical energy to be recovered during certain phases of flight while improving engine performance.

The advantages are therefore numerous:

  • Reduction in fuel consumption during descent and landing phases
  • Higher combustion chamber outlet temperature, enabling the use of new fuels such ashydrogen
  • An overall improvement in performance

A forward-looking project that aims to continue, as it will surely be carried on next year by other students!

This PJE was proposed and supervised by Cyrille Gillot, a teacher at the Châlons campus.
