The Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Lille welcomed eight classes from local schools—ranging from third to fifth grade—as part of the “Graines de Chercheurs” initiative, a project launched by Adrienne Gaspard, a National Education inspector, and coordinated, on the Arts et Métiers side, by Olivier Roussette, the campus’s science outreach coordinator.

"Seeds of Researchers": An Immersion in the Heart of the Arts et Métiers Campus Arts et Métiers Lille

The Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Lille welcomed eight classes of third- through fifth-graders as part of the “Graines de Chercheurs” initiative, a project led by National Education Inspector Adrienne Gaspard and organized on site by Olivier Roussette, the science outreach coordinator.

From preparing presentations in class… to delivering them on stage at the TRESCA auditorium

The participating classes—two of which were supported by engineering students from the Lille campus serving as “class science partners”—worked throughout the year on various topics such as weather, the properties of air, microorganisms, and “art & programming.” Each group of children thus carefully prepared a presentation highlighting, in particular, the research process and its results.

A presentation in the TRESCA Grand Auditorium on campus

On Monday, May 11, the students rose to the challenge of presenting their work in the main auditorium on the Lille campus, in front of other classes, their teachers, and a few parents who were in attendance.

A Tour of the Laboratories and Workshops

After the presentations, the students had the opportunity to tour the campus laboratories and workshops, where they learned about various areas of research and teaching:

  • At LISPEN, Ana-Sofia Jesus-Goncalves and Karen Issa gave a presentation on robots and a robotics demonstration focusing on their applications in the cookie manufacturing industry
  • At L2EP, François Gruson and Ngac-Ky Nguyen presented the laboratory’s activities related to the solar charging station and electric drive systems
  • In the machining department, François-Xavier Vérin gave a demonstration of the manufacturing process
  • At LMFL, Eddy Terrasse, Loïs Dumoulin, and Maxence Lorthioir presented their work on propulsion, demonstrated by a water rocket launch.

An initiative to promote equal opportunity

Coordinated by Olivier Roussette, this event is fully in line with Arts et Métiers efforts Arts et Métiers promote equal opportunity and foster scientific literacy.

By giving these students the opportunity to present their work in theArts et Métiers auditoriumArts et Métiers in the classroom, and then to gain hands-on experience with scientific and technical environments, the “Graines de Chercheurs” initiative helps promote scientific careers, stimulate curiosity, build self-confidence, and open up a world of possibilities from a very young age.

Thank you to Ms. Gaspard for this meaningful initiative, as well as to Olivier Roussette, Henri Fresko, Rodolphe Sory, and the students who helped organize this event and the guided tours!
