Title

Experimental Study and Modeling of Overheating in Aerospace Alloys During Milling

Summary

Finishing machining is a key step in the manufacture of aerospace parts, as it directly influences their strength and service life. In fact, beyond the geometric aspect, it alters the material’s surface properties, which are collectively referred to as surface integrity. Thermal overexposure, particularly in the form of overheating defects, can significantly degrade these properties and reduce the service life of machined parts.

This thesis aims to better understand and predict these phenomena by linking machining conditions to the effects they produce on surface integrity. To this end, a physics-based approach was developed, combining experiments and modeling.
The research has enabled a better description of the stresses and thermal effects during cutting, highlighted the important role of tool geometry, and proposed methods for predicting material changes.

These results pave the way for tools that allow for better control of machining processes and the prevention of critical machining-related damage.
