Summary
This work was carried out with the aim of predicting manufacturing defects as accurately as possible during the production of a cast steel part. To do this, numerical simulation of the casting process is used, but this does not provide complete satisfaction in terms of predictive capability. In order to improve this prediction, it is necessary to determine the physical properties of the materials (the mold and the steel) across the entire temperature range of the process in order to best feed the simulation software databases. Some properties were measured, while others were calculated using dedicated algorithms.
A comparison between a laboratory experiment and the simulation fed by the new database was carried out, showing that the simulation better predicts the evolution of temperature over time in the mold. This step is a necessary prerequisite for predicting all defects related to the casting process.
