The Arts & Métiers Think Tank was created in 2018, jointly by the École NationaleArts et Métiers the Société des Ingénieurs Arts et Métiers. Its dual mission is to conduct forward-looking research on industry and technology in the public interest and to fuel reflection on the future of the school and its identity.

In France, engineering Grandes Écoles enjoy a reputation unmatched in other countries, where engineers are trained at universities and the most sought-after qualification is a PhD. This blurs the image of French engineers with doctorates. Only 6% of engineers go on to pursue a doctorate.  There are many preconceived notions about their employability and recognition, as the position of engineers from Grandes Écoles has become established as the gold standard.

The report, co-authored by Rémi Bastien and Michael Pereira, debunks preconceptions and highlights the benefits of a doctorate for engineers.

He concludes with the conviction that the engineer-doctor is a profile with a bright future, both in research and industry, and one that needs to be promoted. To this end, he makes recommendations addressed to engineering schools, the public research sector, and the business world.
