Completely carbon-free aviation by 2050: this is the challenge taken up by Safran and Arts et Métiers joined forces to create the BELISAMA Chair: "Mastering high-speed hydromechanical systems," inaugurated on the Paris campus on April 27, 2023.

A long-standing partnership

Safran, a French industrial group specializing in aerospace equipment, has been a partner of the institution for several years and became a patronArts et Métiers 2023. Beyond their shared objectives, the two groups also share the same conviction: research and technological innovation will enable a drastic reduction in the environmental impact of air transport.

This five-year research partnership will improve the reliability of aviation systems and optimize energy consumption. To achieve carbon-free operation of these systems, the Chair will aim to develop new engine architectures, sustainable fuels, and hybrid and more electric technologies, while using environmentally friendly materials.

Support from AMValor and expertise from LIFSE

This Chair is supported by AMValor, a subsidiaryArts et Métiers assists companies and organizations in promoting their research results, developing innovative projects, and optimizing their production processes. It will also benefit from the expertise of LIFSE, a joint Arts et Métiers laboratory. It conducts research in many fields, including aeronautics, acoustics, thermodynamics, turbomachinery development, energy, sustainable mobility, aerospace, processes, and health. With 65 members on the Paris campus, this2,500 m² technology platform will be a considerable asset for experimental resources.

A successful partnership research review

Over the past 10 years, with the support of the Institut Carnot Arts, of which Arts et Métiers a member, this partnership with Safran has resulted in the creation of four test benches, two demonstrators, eight patents filed, 16 publications, and eight CIFRES theses. These impressive results earned Arts et Métiers LIFSE the "Partnership Development" award on January 5 during the Safran Group's R&T Day.

The multidisciplinary engineering programs offered by Arts et Métiers enable Arts et Métiers to work closely with companies to better meet their training and research needs. This collaboration between Safran and Arts et Métiers also Arts et Métiers the importance of cooperation between companies and academic institutions in order to meet technological and societal challenges and prepare for the aviation of tomorrow with ambition and excellence!
