Introduced in September 2020, the professional training contract has attracted 17% of students at the Institut de Laval in their second year of the Master's in Research Management in Interactive 3D Technology. It is a win-win contract. The company becomes a learner and the student takes control of their career path. This collaboration between students, companies, and schools is well suited to the current tight job market.

Meeting with Eva Meurice, a Master2 MTI3D student on a professional training contract, and Vincent Mugnier, her tutor, at Synergiz, an SME recognized as a pioneer in HoloLens technology, a Microsoft Gold partner, and an expert in the field of Mixed Reality (combining real-world objects and virtual objects).

Why did you choose to complete the second year of the MTI3D Research Master's degree under a professional training contract ?

I had already completed my first-year internship at Synergiz, where I had the opportunity to work independently on a highly educational demonstration project that combined technical skills and creativity. I gradually learned how to develop Hololens 2, a recent mixed reality headset from Microsoft, which I discovered and mastered fairly quickly. Through this project, I had the opportunity to manage not only the graphics and development, but also the scenario and user interface of the application. This project, which was already well underway but not finalized at the end of the internship, was intended for presentations at trade shows. The objective of the professional training contract was to complete the application, make it multi-platform by porting it to Android smartphones, and make it collaborative by allowing multiple users to interact with each other on the application.

Continuing my collaboration with Synergiz under a professional training contract allowed me to enter the professional world earlier. It's a very different setting from an internship; you're really part of the company and have the opportunity to take on more responsibility.

What are the highlights of this second year of professional training?

For Vincent Mugnier, Eva Meurice's tutor, the use of professional training contracts is part of a medium-term strategy.

There are many advantages: having someone who is competent, with a solid foundation in immersive technologies, familiar with the latest working methods, who will be acculturated to the company's values and who may eventually join the team.

On the other side of the mirror, Eva learns and applies what she has learned in class and her new skills developed in the workplace. She also reinforces her programming skills by developing her application project, strictly following a roadmap designed jointly with Synergiz. She is proud to know that her company's sales team now has access to a functional application that can be enhanced over time based on customer needs and ideas.

What is your greatest source of satisfaction in your mission?

As the project did not have a defined scenario at the outset, I had carte blanche to imagine how it would unfold. I began by learning about how the Vuforia Engine solution works on HoloLens 2 and the possibilities offered by object detection. The aim was to stay true to the spirit of LEGO, the main theme of my project. I also conducted historical research on the brand as well as graphic research on creations by artists and individuals. From technology monitoring to graphic research, all my ideas came together perfectly to be presented to the company.

What are your career prospects?

I am already considered a member of the team and, as such, I intend to give my best and use my skills to grow with the company. I sincerely want to contribute to its development.
