LabCom CLAS is a laboratory that brings together the Safe Metal steel foundry group and theArts et Métiers Cluny research laboratory (LaBoMaP) to conduct advanced research on cast steels.
On Monday, November 18, 2024, LabCom CLAS brought together its various bodies at the SAFE Metal offices in Lyon: the Steering Committee (CoPil), the Expert Committee (ComEx), and the Scientific Committee (CoS). The day provided an opportunity to review the scientific activities carried out in the various areas of the project, to take stock of administrative and financial management, and to continue the discussion begun at the previous meeting on the sustainability of LabCom with the likely submission of a European H2030 project.
Agenda
- Progress on Jakub Wielgosz's thesis on the design of a pilot tool for highlighting mold/metal interactions in steel foundries. The prototype of the measurement device developed (LAGAF: Automated Gas Analysis Line in Foundries) was presented, along with the tests that led to its validation. The test plan to be implemented during the final year of Jakub's thesis was also validated.
- Presentation of the final results of Tito Moravie's internship on the development of a tool for characterizing mold erosion in sand and the development of a system for visualizing the flow of molten metal inside the mold. The latter will be developed by Tito in his CIFRE thesis starting in January 2025.
- Development of a new casting process called "Alloying in Mould," which allows for the creation of parts with a gradient of physical and chemical properties developed directly in the mold during steel casting, by Morgan Souetre and Alexis Vaucheret. The new tests carried out have removed a number of scientific obstacles and brought us closer to a "Proof of Concept" (targeted for mid-2025).
- Financial update by Alexis Vaucheret: presentation of the accounts and various investments made and planned.
- HR update by Philippe Jacquet on staff departures and arrivals within the project, as well as job vacancies to be filled within LabCom.
- A presentation of the Research Connect tool by Eleanor Fontaine, which could help find new sources of funding for LabCom CLAS or calls for projects to ensure its sustainability.
The day ended with a discussion about the organization of the sixth CoPil-ComEx meeting of LabCom CLAS. It was decided that it would be held at the Cluny campus ofArts et Métiers that demonstrations could be given of all the research devices developed over the past three years.
