On October 18, Arts et Métiers Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) launched the Franco-Malaysian Institute for the Industry of the Future. This strategic partnership marks the institution's desire to develop its relations with Southeast Asia.

The agreement between Arts et Métiers UTP for the creation of the Franco-Malaysian Institute for the Industry of the Future will be signed at the International Conference Center in Kuala Lumpur. In addition to the Arts et Métiers delegation Arts et Métiers the UTP presidency, the ceremony will be attended by the UTP chairman and vice-president of Petronas, the Franco-Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and French companies (Air Liquide, Schlumberger, Technip Energies, EADS, etc.).
Representing Arts et Métiers Laurent Champaney, Director General, Ivan Iordanoff, Deputy Director General for Research and Innovation, Fodil Meragnhi, Director of the Doctoral School, Audrey Stewart, Director of International and European Development, Frédéric Mérienne, Director of the Image Institute, and Laurent Guillaumat, LAMPA laboratory, Angers campus.

A partnership that began in 2015

"This agreement is the culmination of the dynamic partnership thatArts et Métiers forged with UTP since 2015 in both research and training," explains Audrey Stewart. The Image Institute and the Lampa Laboratory in particular have built up numerous collaborations with UTP: visits by professors including Frédéric Mérienne and Laurent Guillaumat, student exchanges for a semester and for internships in laboratories, joint supervision of theses, research projects including recently a Match grant... 
The Franco-Malaysian institute will focus on a physical-digital approach to industry (for a better understanding of engineering systems, smart manufacturing, data collection, AI, VR/AR), sustainable industry (renewable energy, smart and sustainable materials, low tech and resilient technologies, frugal technologies), and a human-centered approach (in the service of the work environment, training, and health) in a context of digital and environmental transitions.   "A research workshop bringingtogether around 20 researchers fromArts et Métiers UTP took place on Thursday, October 13, partly online, to form working groups and define areas of collaboration,"says Audrey Stewart.

In line with government strategy

The creation of the Franco-Malaysian institute is part ofArts et Métiers strategyArts et Métiers establish strategic partnerships on each continent: in Germany with KIT, in the United States with Texas AM, in Africa with the campus in Morocco, and now with UTP in Southeast Asia. It is also part of the economic and scientific diplomacy policy to strengthen France's presence in this region.

Contacts in Singapore as well

The Arts et Métiers delegation Arts et Métiers advantage of its trip to Southeast Asia to visit Singapore on the occasion of the first anniversary of the DesCartes project, of which Francisco Chinesta is the scientific director. It was also an opportunity to meet representatives from two prestigious Singaporean universities that are also partners in the DesCartes project (Nanyang Technological Universityand the National University of Singapore). "The aim is to explore opportunities for collaboration in training, research, and entrepreneurship," says Audrey Stewart.
