Open science is the process of making research results accessible to the public: scientific publications, data, methods, and codes that led to these publications. It recognizes that it is normal for publicly funded research to be returned to the public. This reinforces progress and increases the credibility of research.

As a reminder, the 2020 Research Programming Act includes open science among the missions of researchers and teacher-researchers. It sets a target of 100% open access publications by 2030. The second national plan for open science (2021-2024) defines four areas of focus:

  • Generalize open access to publications,
  • Structure, share, and open research data,
  • Open and promote source codes produced by research,
  • Transforming practices to make open science the default principle.

Arts et Métiers ' involvementArts et Métiers the scale of the challenge

Arts et Métiers quickly Arts et Métiers involved in this process with the creation of the SAM open archive in 2013. This platform for depositing scientific publications is unique in that it offers the full text of 100% of its publications.  Researchers and doctoral students at the institution, each affiliated with one of its 15 laboratories, are getting into the habit of depositing their articles there. The metadata for the repository is validated by the Arts et Métiers libraries.

The milestone of 5,000 publications submitted was reached last October. In addition to already determining the funding allocated to each laboratory, publication is being encouraged more than ever, with the evaluation of Arts et Métiers laboratories Arts et Métiers next year by the High Council for the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES). On this occasion, the publication rate will be scrutinized closely.

68% of publications from 2020 will be freely accessible in 2021

For the first time in 2022, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation (MESRI) is offering institutions that wish to participate a version of the French open science barometer based on their institution's publications. The aim of thisbarometer is to measure the evolution of open science practices in France using reliable, open, and controlled data.
