On Thursday, April 5, 2018, two student teams fromthe Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Châlons-en-Champagne took part in the final of the fifth edition of the FANUC Olympiads. The Bachelor of Technology students and general engineering students competed against around twenty teams in five industrial robotics challenges.
A multi-stage qualification process
Before securing their place in the national final, students from the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Châlons-en-Champagne, under the watchful eye of Jeremy Blanks, had to pass several stages:
Step 1: Preselection
Each team had to submit a complete file including a technical proposal and a video extracted from the "Roboguide" simulation software. They had to design and implement a virtual production cell.
Step 2: Preparation in a food processor
The " Bachelor" and " General Engineer " teams benefited from a full day of preparation for the final exams with FANUC trainers at the FANUC France premises (in Lisses) on Tuesday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 7, 2018.
The national finals were then held on Thursday, April 5, at FANUC France’s headquarters and consisted of five different robot-based challenges. Inspired by real-world problems encountered in the workplace, these challenges lasted between 30 minutes and one hour. The 20 finalist teams were divided into two categories (Bachelor’s degree and Master of Science ) and had the opportunity to work with the latest FANUC technologies for industry. At the end of the day, representatives from each team competed in a general knowledge quiz related to robotics.
A contest, skills
Through this competition, the two Arts et Métiers teams Arts et Métiers the opportunity to develop five robotics projects from start to finish, while complying with technical constraints and time limits. The students demonstrated their ability to work together and develop team spirit.
According to Gaspard Bourgeois, a second-year engineering student, the FANUC Olympiads provide a professional immersion experience: "The preliminary project confronted me with the difficulties associated with robotizing a production line. This is an area I would like to focus on during my end-of-study internship."
For Maxime Belcour, a second-year bachelor's student: "The FANUC competition allowed me to learn the basics of industrial robotics. It's also an opportunity to learn how to manage your preparation time while keeping your stress under control."
With a total of 95 points, the engineering students climbed to 7th place in the national rankings in the Master of Science )” category, while the Bachelor of Technology students finished in 10th place in the “Bachelor’s degree (3-year program)” category. A valuable learning experience to be repeated next year for the 6th edition of these Olympiads!
