On Thursday, October 10, 2019, Yves Kolegain, a doctoral student at the Design, Manufacturing, and Control Laboratory, will defend his thesis entitled: "Trajectory correction of a robot manipulator used for friction stir welding." This CIFRE thesis was carried out withthe Institut de Soudure.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a process invented in 1991. This technique involves welding the materials of the two parts to be joined in a solid state by mixing them locally using a tool called a "pin."

The robotization of this process represents a major challenge for the industry but still faces some technical issues, particularly the flexibility of the robot, which causes the tool to deviate from its programmed trajectory.

In his thesis, Yves Kolegain proposes two solutions enabling the robot to follow the desired trajectory.
