On March 22, 2018, Arts et Métiers , in collaboration with PSA Group, Arts et Métiers a workshop on the challenges of eco-design associated with the circular economy.

The circular economy refers to an economic model that aims to produce goods and services while limiting the consumption and waste of raw materials, water, and energy. By seeking to "close the life cycle" of products, services, waste, materials, water, and energy, the circular economy is part of sustainable development and naturally lies at the intersection of environmental and economic issues.

The objective of this workshop is to present scientific and industrial tools and methodologies that can be used to address the major challenges of developing the circular economy.

As France offers a sufficiently broad overview of initiatives in this field, the speakers will come from the French academic and industrial worlds. Issues related to eco-design, environmental impacts, economic development, and resource supply will be addressed during the workshop.

Program

The program will begin with a presentation of the regulatory and institutional framework, highlighting the challenges identified in Europe and France for the development of a circular economy approach.

Next, four major themes will be addressed in relation to research questions and methodological or operational industrial developments.

  • The challenges of sourcing materials:

- How to assess the criticality of mineral raw materials in the supply chain,
- How to take this criticality into account in product design, what are the relevant indicators and associated tools.

  • Eco-design applied to the circular economy:

- What design tools should be used to take into account the entire product life cycle, particularly its end of life?
- What data is available and how can it be made accessible?

  • The environmental justification for circular economy initiatives:

- How to take circular economy loops into account in the environmental assessment of a product.

  • What business models are associated with the development of the circular economy?

- How circular economy business models fit into corporate strategies,

Each topic is illustrated by several academic and industry presentations lasting approximately 20 minutes. The session is then concluded with a 10-minute round table discussion with the speakers on the topic, interacting with ATA participants.
