On the occasion of the 2019 Science Festival, the Laboratory for the Study of Microstructures and Materials Mechanics (LEM3) is organizing two events to give the public a fun introduction to its activities.

The mysteries of material deformation at the heart of fantasy

Hosted by Antoine Guitton, lecturer at the University of Lorraine and researcher at LEM3, this conference will provide insight into how atoms react at the nanometric scale to produce macroscopic deformation.

A lecture that will answer a few questions: why did the Titanic sink, why did Elendil's sword break, and why is Valyrian steel so strong?

Practical information:
• Wednesday, October 9
• 5:30 p.m.
• Lecture hall 2 of the Arts et Métiers campus Arts et Métiers Metz
• Free admission

Journey to the heart of materials, from atoms to sheet metal

Reserved for school groups upon registration (fully booked), the workshops will allow participants to discover in a fun way and in small groups how matter behaves, how it deforms, breaks, or transforms at different scales.

These workshops will be led by engineers and research professors from LEM3.
