A little history
Cluny Abbey has been a place of learning for eleven centuries. From religious to secular, from generalist to technical, it has evolved over time. During the abbey's first 900 years, knowledge was passed on by the Cluniacs. It was intended for future monks but also for young lay people. After the Revolution and the departure of the religious community, teaching became secular, and four schools followed one another. The first, a college, provided a classical education, as was customary at the time. It gave way to specialized education aimed at training managers for agriculture, commerce, and industry. This pioneering form of knowledge transmission saw the first stirrings of technical education in workshops. The third school trained workers and foremen, with a focus on practical skills. With the last school, Arts et Métiers, which still occupies the premises today, cutting-edge technical education became the norm, ushering in the era of engineers and inventors.
