Laurent Champaney holds a degree in industrial engineering and graduated from the École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay in 1991. He completed his PhD at the École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay in 1996, with a thesis entitled "A new modular approach to the analysis of three-dimensional structural assemblies." He taught at the University of Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines from 1996 to 2005, then at ENS Paris-Saclay from 2005 to 2012, where he was director of the Mechanical Engineering Department. In 2009, he had an expatriate experience as a visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Laurent Champaney joined Arts et Métiers 2012 as Deputy Director General for Training, where he led an educational reform to adapt training programs to the needs of the industry of the future. President of the jury for the industrial engineering agrégation (higher education teaching qualification) - Mechanical Engineering Option, Laurent Champaney has been Chief Executive OfficerArts et Métiers 2017 and, since 2021, President of the Conférence des Grandes Ecoles, which brings together 238 French Grandes Ecoles.
