PROGRAM

The beginning of the academic part of this MSc takes place every year at the end of January - beginning of February, to be completed in mid-May. It is followed by a research internship (training) during 4 to 6 months. Some partnerships (ENSAIT Roubaix, ECAM Lyon) may require the start of an internship / research project before the academic part.

The academic part of this Master has seven teaching units (UE):

  • (UEA) Review: metallurgy and continuum mechanics – Cluny
  • (UE1) Project management and initiation to research (6 ECTS) – Cluny
  • (UE2) Polymers and Processing (4 ECTS) – Paris (ATHENS Week)
  • (UE3) Composite materials (4 ECTS) – Paris et Roubaix
  • (UE4) Experimental techniques (6 ECTS) – Lille
  • (UE5) Surface treatments (6 ECTS) – Cluny
  • (UE6) Powder metallurgy (4 ECTS) – Dijon

Please note: around 20% of the courses are given in English today, with a strong will to increase it in the coming years. The materials and documents provided to students are mostly in English.

VALIDATION TERMS

The evaluation of these teaching units is done by continuous control, tests and / or defence, depending on the teaching unit.

EDUCATIONAL MODALITIES

The classes are in the form of lectures, practical work or project. An internship / research project, in a company or in a laboratory, during 4 to 6 months, will and must be validated by a report and a defence in front of a committee. This internship can be carried out in France (paid in accordance with the local laws) or internationally, on a subject that the team of the master can propose or that the student can find by himself (after agreement of the scientific responsible of the MSc).

STRENGTHS OF THE TRAINING

This training gives:

  • A broader vision of materials, processes and the influence of surfaces and interfaces
  • A complementary approach between experimentation (high level materials and methodologies) and modelling (multi-physics and multi-scale)
  • A project management approach in general and scientific in particular

OPPORTUNITIES

This master prepares for further studies in doctoral training and trains experts in the fields of Mechanics of Materials and Manufacturing Processes. The multidisciplinary approach allows access to research and development positions in large institutional or industrial groups such as CEA, EDF, Renault, AREVA, APERAM, SAFRAN, etc. More than a third of students continue with a PhD (usually accompanied by a CIFRE contract), usually in partnership with one of these companies.

Some areas of application:

  • Structural materials: the thermomechanical and surface treatments of these materials aim to improve the working properties, the corrosion or wear resistance and durability, while lightening the structures
  • Composite materials and multi-materials: used for example in the automotive industry to lighten structures while retaining their rigidity
  • Technical and high performance polymers: the liner of the hydrogen tank at very high pressure (700 bars of operation) for the automobile
  • Smart materials: metals or shape memory polymers
  • Materials with a property gradient: locally improve mechanical parts in the most loaded areas, and lead to finding optimal solutions from an economic and mechanical point of view
  • Materials with specific functional surface: in order to minimize or maximize friction, shine, dimensional tolerance, production of hydrophobic or hydrophilic surfaces, fatigue contact resistance …
  • Coated materials: painting, galvanizing, chrome plating, nickel plating, HVOF, PVD, CVD…
  • Biomaterials: bone-biomaterial interface, biocompatibility interface, cell adhesion, bio-integration, wear and release of particles, bio-corrosion, degradation of biomaterials for orthopaedic prostheses, etc.
  • Materials for food use: bio-neutrality, impact resistance, thermal resistance, adhesion, cleaning, aging, etc.
